The CCSA in conjunction with the Friends of Black Hill and Morialta is pleased to announce our first habitat restoration day up at Morialta Conservation Park.

When?
Sunday 11th May. Meet at 9:30am at the car parking near gate #17 on Norton Summit Road, or if you want to meet at the crag be there from 10am. Work will finish at 12pm but bring some lunch and stay for an afternoon climb.

What is it all about?
Climbers taking responsibility for the long term health of our crags in high value conservation areas.

What will we be doing?
This first event will be about removal of feral weeds from our crags. After much discussion about what affects climbers the most it was agreed that the olive trees at the base of the Billiard table must go! We shall be looking at weeds which are above and below the cliffs – yes one day that will mean tackling some of that blackberry!

How will we do it?
We will use well established bush care techniques, in this case we will be drilling holes in the Olive and filling with a solution of glyphosate. This has shown to be the most effective way to kill an olive, chopping at them just encourages multiple stems to grow back.

What do I bring?
Sturdy shoes, hat, water and as we will be working at the base of the cliffs helmets. Don’t forget your gear and some lunch if you intend to stay for an afternoon climb!

If it is very wet Sunday morning the event will not go ahead. We appreciate that this Sunday is Mothers day and it may be difficult this time for folks to join in, don’t worry there will be many more! We hope to make this a regular event.

Please email events to let us know if you can make it so we ensure we have enough tools for everyone.

Depending on good weather conditions the work should be completed some time mid next week. There will be some sections of the trail blocked off when they are completing the stone work along the track, but they are trying to keep interruption to a minimum, most of the work is on the new section of trail.

From The Club President:

Hi everyone, please note works on roadside vegetation on June 1st. The message as received below outlines the work to be carried out and future plans.

As you will also note our recent efforts as a club have been recognised, appreciated and I believe contributed greatly to maintaining access to the Norton Summit crag. Thanks to everyone who has contributed in some way, let’s keep up the good work.

My advice is for no climbing at Norton Summit on June 1, if you simply must climb there are plenty of nearby options, but please also consider turning up to help the locals and keep access to this area.

Regards

Adam Clay

Subject: Pizey’s Knob revegetation

Hi Adam,

My name is Mack Wilson from Old Norton Summit Rd, manager of the recent revegetation works under Pizey’s Knob.

Thank you for your organisation of the recent clean-up and for keeping an eye out for non CCSA climbers.

This email is just to introduce myself and to let you know about some upcoming works and potential support from your climbers.

Works – interruption to parking for climbers:

Sat. June 1 10:00am:

Many of the street residents will be gathering on the site to get rid of the blackberry by rugging up and rolling it down the hill. This is likely to cause some parking problems for climbers as some of the residence may park their vehicles with equipment.

In order to not upset your climbers, you may wish to inform them of this work. If any of them want to help with Black Berry removal, we would more than welcome them.

Native Planting:

We are planning the planting in July, August but are yet to set a schedule as we need to finish cleaning the site. After speaking with a number of CCSA climbers, they have expressed interest in helping out. We would more than welcome there help.

If OK, I will let you know closer the planting dates in case you would like to inform your members.

Thank you again for helping to improve the site and we welcome your support.

Kind regards,

Mack Wilson
