The CCSA in conjunction with the Friends of Black Hill and Morialta are holding the regular habitat restoration day up in Morialta Conservation Park.
When?
Sunday 14th September, 2014. Meet at 9:30am at the car parking near gate #17 on Norton Summit Road. Work will finish at 12pm but bring some lunch and stay for an afternoon climb.
What is it all about?
Climbers taking responsibility for the long term health of our crags in high value conservation areas.
What will we be doing?
We will again be working on the Olives at the base of the Billiard table with chemicals, so if you don’t plan on being involved we suggest you climb elsewhere to prevent any from getting on your gear. We shall also be working on the one-leaved Cape Tulips about Far Crag.
How will we do it?
We will use well established bush care techniques, in this case we will be drilling holes in the olive and filling with a solution of glyphosate. This has shown to be the most effective way to kill an olive, chopping at them just encourages multiple stems to grow back. Please DON’T chop, hack, kick, generally destroy branches on olives at the base of billiard table, you are actually making it harder to kill the tree as they grow back with multiple stems.
The Cape Tulips need their flower heads removed and the stems swabbing with glyphosate.
What do I bring?
Sturdy shoes, hat, water, morning tea and for those working at the base of the cliffs helmets. Don’t forget your gear and some lunch if you intend to stay for an afternoon climb! Anyone planning to bring kids along let us know and we’ll get them working on the Cape Tulip away from the cliffs.
If it is very wet Sunday morning the event will not go ahead.
Please email Crag Care to let us know if you can make it so we ensure we have enough tools for everyone.
